Stephen has worked as a roadie for rock’n’roll shows, a call centre operator, agricultural science magazine editor, actor, handyman, and illustrator. The list of things he is afraid of includes heights, dark water, running late, thumbtacks and spiders. Fortunately, he has found an outlet for these and other terrors in his writing.

Stephen's short stories and short films have won awards around the world. He has written and directed broadcast television documentaries, and is the author of two thriller novels and is embarking on his third. Between books, Stephen works as a screenwriter and story consultant for Australian film and television producers; he has also had a long creative association with beyondblue: the national depression initiative developing content relating to youth resiliency and wellbeing.

Stephen resides in Brisbane’s inner-west just a few kilometres from where he grew up. He loves international travel, apart from the travel. He lives with his wife, two young children and a black cat also afflicted with indecision, which can’t make up its mind what it wants for dinner. Chicken, probably.
